Where To Find The Best Gyros In Athens

Gyros, pronounced "yee-ros" in Greece, are savory bundles of joy wrapped up in fresh pita. This Greek staple is an all-time favorite, and no trip to Athens would be complete without trying one. Stuffed with fillings like pork, chicken, lamb, veggies, and - let us never forget - the ever-delicious tzatziki, gyros are pronounced like "heroes" for a reaosn. Here are our favorite spots to snag an authentic gyro in Athens.

O Kostas
Pentelis 5, Athina 105 57, Greece
This go-to "souvlatzidiko" prepares its meat fresh every morning, and closes when it runs out! Serving up mouthwatering family recipes since the 1980s, O Kostas is hard to beat. Since it's such a beloved local hot-spot, we recommend getting there early. If there is a line (which there probably will be), it's worth the wait - we promise.

Savvas Restaurant
Ermou 91, Athina 105 55, Greece
Also known as "Sabbas," this must-try restaurant is located in a beautiful mansion just steps from Monastiraki Square. Sure, it's known as one of the best spots for delicious Greek cuisine, but what's most special about Savvas is that view. Make sure you ask to sit on the charming rooftop garden, where you'll be greeted with a postcard-worthy view of the Acropolis and a yummy gyro.

O Thanasis
Mitropoleos 69, Athina 105 55, Greece
If you ask a local Athenian where to get a good gyro, they'll most likely point you to O Thanasis. Located in bustling Monastiraki Square, this popular restaurant serves up authentic, high quality gyros and souvlaki grills in a charming no-frills atmosphere. Admire traditional decor inside, or sit outside and enjoy your gyro as you people-watch.

Prodorpion
Akadimias 52, Athina 106 79, Greece
Don't be fooled by Prodorpion's central location - it is far from a tourist trap. This reasonably priced gyro joint offers authentic Greek food in the middle of the action! Another plus: there's a bilingual menu.

Bairaktaris
Kirikiou 6, Athina 105 55, Greece
With several locations throughout Athens, the Bairaktari family offers its guests fine Greek cuisine in unpretentious-yet-charming taverna settings. Most nights, you'll hear live music fill the eateries with classical Mediterranean sounds. While each restaurant is unique in its own vibe and decor, all of the Bairaktari's tavernas are the same in that they serve up some of the best gyros in Athens. Mix traditional Greek decor with incredible food and friendly service and you've got Bairaktaris.

Smile Restaurant
